Among the first Chinese Americans to earn an appointment to a judicial seat in the United States, Judge Delbert E. Wong made history. Judge Wong was appointed to the Los Angeles Municipal Court in 1959, and later, to the Superior Court of Los Angeles County. In the landmark case People v. Cohen (1969), he ruled in favor of protecting free speech for those protesting the Vietnam War—a decision that would be upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.
