Judge Joseph Albert Wapner practiced law for ten years before being appointed to the Los Angeles Municipal Court in 1959. In 1961, he was elevated to the Superior Court of Los Angeles County, where he served until his retirement. Judge Wapner became a household name when The People’s Court first aired in 1981. For twelve seasons, the show brought the cases heard in small claims court into viewers’ homes.
