First enslaved person to sue for freedom in California

Bridget “Biddy” Mason was born enslaved in Georgia. She used the Los Angeles County court system to gain freedom for herself, her children, and other members of her extended family. After winning their freedom, Mason remained in Los Angeles. She became a successful businesswoman and helped found the city’s first African American church–the First African Methodist Episcopal (F.A.M.E.).
