First judge elected in the city of Los Angeles



Judge Agustín Olvera arrived in California from Mexico in 1834. Judge Olvera’s leadership in California’s transition to statehood earned him a judicial appointment in 1849. He was later elected the first judge of the newly incorporated city of Los Angeles. In 1877, Olvera Street was named for him.
